MAC Love That Look

Update:  Love That Look is available now!  The four repromoted shades are Smoke&Diamonds, Glamour Check, Grand Entrance, and Dreammaker.  Interesting because I think I have all four of those.  Heh...guess I chose the popular colors then.  I saw them at my local Nordstrom's and I thought most of the colors were gorgeous.  Here's my thoughts are a couple of colors.
Rated R is the only color I would hesitate to buy simply because it's a very yello/green shade that is hard to pull off.  If you own Sharp or Bitter, they're very similar.
Strike a Pose is this gorgeous sea blue.  It's similar to Plumage (permanent), but it's more shimmery.
Ego is described as a yellow pink, but I think it's just a nice baby pink.  A versatile color that will be great at highlighting.
One Off is this pure green - not too blue, not too yellow.

Coming in August July to MAC is Love That Look, a collection of 12 eyeshadows and 4 pearlglide eyeliners.  If you missed out on Smoke&Diamondseyeshadow last year, it's being repromoted!  Holla!  Sorry, that's cheesy, I'll stop now.  I think most of the shades are limited edition, but I don't have the exact information available yet.

Here is the preliminary information i do have:

Eyeshadows:
Grand Entrance: Cool apricot beige
Smoke & Diamonds: Dirty dark grey
Glamour Check:Reddish brown
Strike a Pose: Dirty deep sea blue
Ego: Light yellow pink
Fashion Groupie: Light, blue violet
Unbasic White: Snow white
One-Off: Medium green with silver pearl
Rated R: Light, yellow green
Style Snob: Dirty pink brown with gold pearl

Round 2 of Weddings: the Maid of Honor

I showed you the pictures from the wedding I did 2 weeks ago earlier, so here are the pictures from the wedding I did just a week ago.  I have a few more pictures for you and I actually have more specific product names and colors.   It was interesting to see how the makeup held up since the weather was H-O-T in the Bay Area this weekend.  The church where the ceremony was held was air conditioned, but standing outside in the heat for any length of time would certainly cause the makeup to melt off!

First up is the Maid of Honor, the bride's sister Denise.

Before

I start the application process.

Applying false lashes

The eyelashes really made Denise's eyes pop.

Bah.  I realize now that I didn't take a direct "after" picture of Denise's makeup.  This was taken at the end of the evening though, so you can see that her makeup held up well!

Here's what I used:
Eyes: Urban Decay Primer Potion, MAC Eyeshadow in Shrrom: For the grays, I used this 4 pan Stila compact's light gray color (I don't have a name for it) and the dark gray is the dark gray in Lancome's 4Romance palette.  Liner is Estee Lauder DoubleWear in Graphite
Face: Prepped face with Exuviance Matte Perfection, Exuviance Skin Caring Foundation, Make Up For Ever HD Powder, Nars Blush/Bronzer in Orgasm/Laguna
Lips: Oops...forgot this one.  I think it's a Bobbi Brown lipstick I got for free somewhere.

Chanel's Fall 2009: Venice Beckons

I think that if I had a choice, Italy would be the first European country I'd choose to visit.  There are other places I want to see for sure, but there's something about Italy that is calling my name.  Okay it's probably more the food than anything (pasta is my friend!), but Chanel has decided that their Fall 2009 makeup would be inspired by the city of Venice.  I have images of lovely gondolas and canals in my head; someone who's been there can tell me if these colors are reminiscent of Venice.  I have previously stated that as much as I love Chanel stuff; the price point is pretty high.  It's a sad thing too, because I'm quite intrigued by a couple of items in this collection.  But the job market is still "in transition".  Bah!  My one thought would be that this is cheaper than actually going to Venice.

Eye Gloss: Lumnious Cream Quadra Eyeshadow.  If I had $65 for one product, this would be it.  The consistency of these shadows is just so unique!  It's very much like lip gloss, but it's for the eyes.  It's a good thing these colors are not pink or red, otherwise I'm fairly certain a lot of people would use it on the lips.  But seriously, I'd be interested in seeing how this wears on everyday people.  I've seen some other blogs and it appears to be a good layering tool, which I can see being true.

This is the other item I covet: Tweed Sienna blush.  At $45 for a blush though, it's not something I would be purchasing though, so I'll just look at the pretty effect it creates.  I think the blush would be great for a lot of people; it looks like you'll get a nice pink and some bronzer.

Two nail polishes.  Pretty, but meh.  Intermezzo is more interesting since it's a pearly white and I can honestly say I don't have a white nail polish.

Have you heard of ILLAMSQUA?

Until about 3 months ago, I had never heard of this brand. Illamsqua.  I first heard the name on All Lacquered Up and certainly thought the colors were pretty.  Since it was heralded as a brand for those in the U.K., I didn't pay it much thought.  Then about a month ago, I saw some rumors that it might be coming to the United States via Sephora.  Other beauty bloggers talked about it with great excitement.  Illamsqua's motto is "makeup for your alter ego".  I love it!  I like to think my alter ego is much more daring and fabulous than I actually am and I love that their makeup looks are full of color and drama.
Here are some of the images that are on Sephora's website to introduce the brand:

Interesting!  Illamsqua is definitely not a Bobbi Brown type company that goes for a natural, every day look.  The prices are at a premium; nail polish is $14.each; eyeshadows $20.each; lipsticks $20.each; false lashes are $16.each.  It's not as much as say, Chanel or Nars even, but not just a drugstore brand.  I haven't tried anything from the brand, but when it comes to stores in the U.S. later this summer (August or early fall), I'll check it out and let you know if anything is worth it.  For now, check them out on Sephora's website and see if there's something you'd like.

The Bride: Lindsay

All right, now that you've seen the bridesmaids: Erin, Dana, and Jamie, here is the bride Lindsay.  I kept the makeup neutral but tried to be a little more dramatic than with the bridesmaids since all eyes are usually on the bride.

Bridesmaid Jamie

Is it Wednesday already?  The week has started to slip by!  Okay, so one more bridesmaid from the wedding two weeks ago.  This is my friend Jamie and I think the makeup looks great.  The eyes are done with Chanel's Beige compact.  It's a neutral look that looks effortlessly glamorous.  A little bit of concealer under the eyes, Cover Girl Foundation, and lipstick create a beautiful look.

Bridesmaid Dana

Okay, next up in the bridesmaids: Dana.  Again, the exact products used is a little bit fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure most of it is MAC. Foundation is Cover Girl Foundation, with Make Up Forever HD Powder.  The lipstick in the picture was eventually replaced since Dana thought it was a little too bright.

Looking at this picture, I think i would add more blush and a slightly darker color in the outer corenr of the eye.  But Dana like the look, and since she's not accustomed to wearing a lot of makeup, I think it turned out well.

Here's a smaller picture of me and Dana.  I did not put any makeup on =)  And as this post goes I'm, I'm probably doing her makeup again, as Dana is in another wedding today!  I'll post pictures of that next week; I'm hoping to get some additional pictures of the process.  I've already done a test run, so I will have a list of products used.  For now, all I have is pictures.

Bridesmaid Erin

Okay as promised from my wedding makeup tips post, here is the first look I did for the wedding last Sunday. Actually it was a wedding banquet 2 weeks after the original wedding, so it was a bit more casual and not as much pressure.

I really apologize that I don't have a list of the colors I used, plus I took this picture before I applied lipstick, so there's none of that.  I do know I used Cover Girl foundation.  The eysahdwos are MAC - Shroom and Sugarshot are definitely two that I used, but I don't recall the crease colors.  Because I didn't have the opportunity to do a test run on any of these ladies, none of the foundations were a perfect match, so my blending skills were put to good use.  I definitely had to blend Erin's foundation after seeing her in a different light.  The eye makeup is pretty neutral and originally had eye liner on the bottom of the eye but it was a little too dramatic for her taste.

Wedding Makeup Tips

One of the biggest things I've been trying to accomplish this year is becoming a makeup artist for weddings and special events.  A bride's makeup is one of the most memorable things, simply because all eyes are on the bride and it's the look that will be remembered in photographs for years to come.  I've had the opportunity to work with a few brides and bridesmaids, which I will show you pictures of tomorrow.  For today though, I'm going to offer you some tips.

Personally, I think it can be done yourself IF you are used to applying makeup. Strangely enough, I find it's the people who don't wear makeup often are the ones who often do it themselves, and quite honestly, I think that's a mistake. Wedding makeup is different from regular makeup primarily for two reasons: it needs to last and it needs to photograph well.  So what can you do to help your makeup last all day?

First, consider your environment.  Is the wedding in the heat?  Inside? Outside? Winter? Spring?  Summer?  All the environmental factors that you normally deal with need to be taken into consideration for your wedding.  Generally creams have longer lasting power, but are also more prone ot "melting" off in the past.  I would have a base of a cream or gel blush and top with some powder blush.  If you're getting married in the winter in a formal church, avoid anything too shimmery, sparkly or bright.  Actually that's probably good advice no matter what season or venue the event is in.

Secondly, avoid products with SPF.  Wait - isn't that contrary to all those reports that say you should use sunscreen?  Yes it is.  What I mean is to avoid MAKEUP products with SPF in them.  Moisturizer is the place to slather on the SPF, not the foundation or powder.  SPF has a mineral in it that will reflect light and make you look more shiny in photographs than you want to.  By using it as a base in your moisturizer, you'll stay protected and perfect matte.

Also in the 'reflective' category is regular mineral makeup.  I know there are millions of Bare Minerals' fans out there, but honestly, you're better off with a regular liquid foundation.  Mineral makeup is great for every day when you want that natural glow, but may photograph just a little bit different than you want.  This is not a knock on mineral makeup in general, just it's uncanny ability to make you look good in person.

Another tip: natural makeup does not mean NO COLOR.  Most brides want to look "natural" and not a caricature of themselves; that is something I can definitely understand and hope to achieve.  Natural to most people probably rules out blue and green eyeshadow, but it doesn't have to include only nude colors.  For the wedding I did last weekend, I heard a number of comments that the makeup looked "natural" which is great, but there was color on the eyes.

As a makeup artist, I will apply a lot of blush.  In person, it may look scary or heavy handed, but in photographs, you'll have these great defined cheekbones that will look great.  If you do it yourself and you're not used to wearing a blush, practice first.  Take a picture of yourself with what you think is a little more blush than you normally do and you'll see that it doesn't look as bold as you think.  Also, please, please blend the blush.  Nothing worse than having a strip of color on the cheeks.  The color should be concentrated on the apples and blended out towards the temple.  Take a big fluffy brush, smile, and blend.

The sixth tip: don't feel like you have to stick to black eye liner.  Gray, brown, and navy are good alternatives that may help soften the look.  If you don't wear eyeliner on a normal basis, putting eyeliner under the eye can seem extreme, so definitely practice the application if you plan on doing it yourself.

7: This really should be the number one tip, but here goes: Make sure your foundation matches.  This is an important part of any woman's look and nothing's worse than having a foundation that doesn't match.  Whether you do it yourself or have it professionally done, walk around in different lighting, have a couple people look at you both close up and at a distance - and see if the foundation matches.  If somebody else did your makeup and the foundation unfortunately doesn't match- and they are no longer available for touch ups, grab a brush and start blending down the chin and neck.

For now, those are all the tips, but stay tuned for some examples and pictures of wedding makeup.
